Getting motivated isn’t always easy to do, but it’s important.
No matter what you’re doing or where you’re at in life, motivation is essential. It’s what keeps you going, what gets you out of bed each morning and what gives you the strength to get back up on that horse after you’ve fallen off or been knocked down. Sometimes, you wake up feeling motivated and ready to take on the world, but other times, motivation can be hard to come by. That’s why, in our last blog, we went over a few tips to help you get motivated. Here are a few more.
#6. Strive to achieve the benefits rather than just avoiding the consequences.
There are basically two kinds of motivation: positive and negative. Negative motivation is working to achieve something to avoid the negative consequences associated with failing to achieve it. For example, this might be working out for the sole purpose of avoiding health problems or weight gain. Positive motivation is working towards something to enjoy the benefits, like working out so that you can run a 5k without stopping or feel proud and confident in your favorite pair of jeans. While negative and positive motivation both have their place, for most people, positive motivation is much more effective than negative motivation. So, instead of focusing on the consequences of not hitting your goal, focus on the benefits of hitting it!
#7. Make your goal public.
In our previous blog, we talked about how the mere act of setting a goal in itself can be motivating. But when you make that goal public, it becomes even more motivating. Why? Because when you make your goal public, you are getting other people involved. For most people, it’s much easier to let themselves down than it is to let their friends or families down. Making your goal public adds accountability to the mix, and for many people, that can definitely be motivating.
#8. Surround yourself with the right people.
The people you surround yourself with play a huge role in your mood, attitude and motivation. Both negativity and positivity are contagious, and if you surround yourself with people who are always negative, then, eventually, you will become a more negative person as well. But the opposite is also true. If you surround yourself with people who are positive, engaged and motivated, it will help you to become that type of person as well. Make it a point to surround yourself with the right kind of people. It’ll make reaching your goals easier and give you a more positive outlook on life.
#9. Keep track of your progress.
In more than a few of our previous posts, we’ve talked about the importance of tracking your progress when you’re working toward a goal. And one of the main reasons why it’s so important is that it helps you to stay motivated. When you’re in the middle of something, it can be difficult to gain a clear perspective of the situation. A great example is when you’re working towards a fitness goal. You work hard every day, but you still just feel like you, and you haven’t noticed any big differences. However, if you had been measuring yourself or taking pictures of your progress, you could actually see that you’ve lost inches and your body has changed. When you see how much your hard work has paid off, it will motivate you to keep going!
#10. Recognize how powerful it is when you keep going, even when your heart isn’t in it.
Motivation comes and goes, and some days, it’s almost impossible to get motivated, no matter what you do. When those days come, keep working toward your goal anyway. Your attitude plays a huge role in what you’re able to accomplish, but when your attitude isn’t what you need it to be, you can make up for it by pushing through anyway. Chances are, you’ll find the motivation you need once you start going, and if you don’t, you’ll still get one step closer to your goal.
