The first step towards reaching any goal is setting that goal in the first place. But, not all goals are worth achieving, or even possible to achieve. Too often, people set goals that are so high or out of reach that no one could realistically achieve them, and then when they fail, they beat themselves up. This is not a recipe for success; it’s a recipe for constant failure and self-hatred, and it’s not at all healthy. When you set your goal, make sure it’s one that you can realistically reach.
Whether your goal is related to your fitness level, your career or your finances, it’s not really a goal if you don’t have to push yourself to reach it. Goals are meant to make us grow and evolve, and for that, they need to push you out of your comfort zone. Yes, it’s important that your goal is achievable, but it should also be challenging.
If your goal is not specific, how will you ever know when you reach it? Setting great goals is about setting specific goals. So, instead of making your goal to write more, make your goal to write 1,000 words every day. Or, instead of making your goal to take better care of yourself, make your goal to eat a home-cooked meal five times a week and get to the gym every other day.
In addition to your goal being specific, it’s also essential that it’s measurable. Keeping track of your progress is a key part of attaining any goal. When you see how far you’ve come, it’ll give you the motivation to keep on going. But, in order to measure your results, your goal must first be measurable. So, when you’re setting your goal, ask yourself how you plan to measure it.
Finally, it’s important that you have a time-frame in mind of when you want to reach your goal. If your goal is just to achieve something at some point in the future, it’ll be all too easy to procrastinate. Why would you want to take the time to work out or save money now when you could always just do it tomorrow and still successfully hit your goal at some point? But, when you have a specific timeframe in mind, procrastinating will often mean not hitting your goal, and having a real consequence may be enough to prevent you from procrastinating.
