Don’t let bad habits prevent you from reaching your goals!
No matter what your goal may be — to save up to buy a house, to lose 15 pounds or to get promoted at work — there are a few bad habits that can keep you from reaching them. Our goal setting app can help you stay on track, but it’s also important to know about the habits that can hinder your success.
Bad Habit #1. You set unrealistic goals.
The first step to reaching your goals is to set realistic goals. If your goal is to lose 50 pounds in two months, you’re never going to be able to reach that goal no matter what you do. While it’s always good to set high expectations for yourself, it’s essential that your goals can realistically be reached. If you set unrealistic goals, not only will it be impossible to actually reach them, but it can also discourage you from setting other goals in the future. As we learned in a previous blog, goal setting is something everyone should do, and it’s important that you keeping setting goals and trying to reach them.
Bad Habit #2. You let your fear of failure defeat you.
No one wants to fail. It’s disheartening, and it can leave you feeling beaten down and discouraged. However, you shouldn’t let your fear of failing to reach you goals keep you from actually trying to reach them. The fact of the matter is, even if you don’t lose a specific number of pounds or save a certain amount of money within a set time-frame, you’re still making progress towards your goals. Giving it your all and coming up short is not a failure. It’s an experience you can learn and grow from.
Bad Habit #3. You focus too much on the end result.
When you’re working towards a goal, it’s normal to think about how good it will feel when you finally reach it. In this day and age, we get instant gratification from almost everything in our lives, and that can make us impatient when it takes longer than we might like to reach our goals. However, the path to reaching your goals is paved with consistency and small victories, and if you’re too focused on the end results, it can make that path foggier and harder to follow. Don’t get so caught up in reaching your goals that you don’t take the necessary steps to do so!
Bad Habit #4. You don’t have a practical strategy.
Regardless of what kind of goal you are trying to reach, you need to have a sensible plan in place for how to reach it. Goals are reached step by step, and it’s important to ensure that the steps you are planning to take are small enough and achievable enough to actually do so. In some cases, like getting a promotion at work, the strategy can be clearly laid out for you ahead of time. But in other cases, like weight loss or financial goals, you may need some outside guidance on how to strategize. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you come up with a plan to reach your goals, because having a plan is arguably the most important part!
Bad Habit #5. You make excuses.
- I don’t have time.
- It’s too difficult for me.
- What if I’m doing it wrong?
- It’s not the perfect time.
- I’m too young/old.
- What if people laugh at me?
- So and so isn’t doing it, so neither am I.
- It takes too long.
These are just a few examples of the many excuses people make to avoid reaching their goals. And while these excuses can be pretty convincing — especially the ones we tell ourselves — they aren’t productive when it comes to actually reaching your goals. In general, these excuses come from two main places: not having a good strategy or fear. Identifying the reason why you are making excuses is the first step to moving past them.
